My Sister and I were home this morning and we heard someone comment on TV that 50% of the youths in Nigeria are unemployed. This then got us talking, are these youths, really unemployed because there are no jobs or they are unemployed because they are unemployable?
By unemployable, what we mean is a lot of Nigerian youths do not have a presentable packaging when they are seeking employment, they lack spunk and carriage, you come for an interview and you're late, not properly dressed or without an idea of what the organization you are seeking employment from is about! Even you yourself, wouldn't want to employ yourself.
Yet, we find some people however even when employed lack the key skills that they require to remain employed. We see lots of cases of people who are not diligent with their work, they resume late, are never on their seats, fight their co workers, dress shabbily, pile up their work saying after all, I can't kill myself, (in my Sister's words, you actually should kill your self ) these kind of people are easily soon sacked or worse still bypassed for promotion or benefits.
On the other hand, we have those who remain unemployed either because they lack the proper packaging, you go for interviews only to see people dress like they are going to throw thrash away. While having an Msc is a good thing, a lot of organizations will gladly employ someone with a 3rd class who will get the job done.
What we re saying isn't that there are so many jobs, but that with the right mindset among the youths of today, the unemployment rate can reduce from that 50% to atleast 20 or 10%.
If you're already employed, give your best, your all to your job, resume at the right time, do all the work you need to do, don't take unnecessary time off work, be faithful where you are, be organized, and most importantly don't bring your home personality to work saying that's how I am, no you can't be that way at Work, that's why it's called Work. If you're lazy at home, you can't be lazy at work, if at home, you're called three times before you respond, you can't do that at work and hopefully in due time, your good personality at work will rub off on your home personality.
And to those still unemployed, next time you apply to that place of your choice, have a knowledge base about your prospective employer, look presentable, be realistic, let your CV be well arranged and be confident. I know we know these things, but it's time we started applying them and in due time, you will be off the unemployment market.
Let's ask ourselves this honest question, is there anyone you know who has the academic qualifications and all other good personalities who has looked for employment and is still unemployed?
I know we understand the spirit behind this write up. Stay blessed now and always.
Above all else, let's remember that it's a diligent man that will stand before Kings.
